Do I Really Need to Replace My Metal Fillings?

Do you have older, amalgam metal dental fillings? Invented in the 1820’s, these restorations were the go-to for repairing cavities until the mid-1990’s, when natural-looking composite resin became more commonplace. Unfortunately, however, while still very durable, amalgam metal is not only noticeable in the smile, but recent studies have found that having more than eight of these restorations can pose health risks. Here’s why if you still have metal fillings, now is the time to replace them.

What Are Amalgam Metal Fillings?

Amalgam metal fillings are tooth restorations used to repair areas of damage or decay in the enamel. They are made of a mixture of several different metals, including copper, tin, silver and mercury. Although generally safe in small quantities, recent studies have discovered that having eight or more can increase the levels of mercury in your blood.

Another common complaint about metal fillings is that they stand out in your arches, so when you open your mouth to eat, speak, or smile, they can cause a great deal of embarrassment.

What Are Composite Resin Fillings?

The good news is that there is an excellent way to replace those old, amalgam metal fillings. Durable, tooth-colored composite resin has been a popular choice since the 1960’s and is considered completely safe for your smile. Made of a blend of resin, quartz, glass, ceramic and coupling agents that allow it to cure under a UV light, these restorations both look and feel like your real teeth, so nobody has to know you’ve ever had fillings!

Should I Replace My Fillings?

While all dental fillings were designed to protect your teeth from further damage and protect their chewing capabilities, none can last forever. Thus, even the most well-cared for restorations will eventually need to be replaced. With proper use and hygiene practices, the average metal filling can last up to 15 years, while composite resin varieties are usually good for around 10 years. Although it’s true tooth-colored restorations don’t have the longevity of metal, it is still considered much safer, and because it can be color-matched to the rest of your smile, it’s much more desirable and attractive than amalgam.

Remember, although amalgam metal fillings have been protecting teeth for centuries, today’s composite resin restorations are safer and more attractive, so stop waiting for a good excuse to protect your teeth. Upgrade to composite resin fillings today and get a gorgeous, safe, healthy grin you can be proud of!
