3 White Lies Your Dentist Can See Through

As you’re at your checkup and cleaning, you may be asked questions about your oral health, dental hygiene routine, and any habits that you have. These help your dentist learn more about your smile and how to adjust their treatment to properly care for it.

However, you might not keep up with certain things as much as you should, like flossing. You may tell a quick lie to seem better, but your dentist can see right through plenty of them! Here are three they can decipher based on what they see in your grin.

Lie #1: I’m Consistent with Flossing

While many people are diligent with brushing, their flossing habits may not be as consistent. You may forget to do it, but your dentist will be able to tell the truth about it. That’s because this thread removes harmful bacteria between your teeth and under your gumline. When you skip it, then you’ll have buildup in these places, which your provider will be able to spot.

Lie #2: It Doesn’t Hurt at All

When your hygienist and dentist are cleaning your smile and taking a look at everything, it may feel uncomfortable. The sensations aren’t something you experience every day, so it may hurt a bit. That’s entirely normal, but you may lie and say it doesn’t, so you don’t hurt the team’s feelings.

Your voice says one thing, but your body can actually tell on you. When something is painful, you may flinch, tighten your legs, twitch your tongue, or close your eyes to deal with it. Instead, be honest about what you’re feeling. That way, you can take a breather if you need it, and your provider can maybe change their technique.

Lie #3: I Never Bite My Nails

This habit might be a result of stress or anxiety, but it can be hard to kick if you do it consistently. Although you may think it’s harmless, it can actually do a number on your teeth. By biting your nails, you cause tiny cracks to form in your enamel. While you may not see them, they can show up on X-rays. The same thing goes for chewing ice as well!

There are many more lies that your dentist can see through, so it’s important you just stay open and honest. Doing so will help your provider learn how to better care for your smile, so it stays strong and problem-free.
